The Chinese government has been endeavoring to promote the high-end, intelligent, and green development of the manufacturing industry. For manufacturing enterprises, it is imperative to promote green innovation to achieve green transformation. Compared to traditional innovation, green innovation, as a more cost-effective and complex knowledge creation activity, often involves the integration, reconstruction, and creation of diverse and heterogeneous green knowledge. It is thus difficult to achieve effective green innovation by relying solely on the internal technical knowledge of a single manufacturing enterprise. As the key to unleashing digital value, enterprise digitalization capability enables enterprises to use digital technology to extensively integrate various resources in the value network to promote enterprise systematic digital change and realize digital value creation, but existing research has limited discussion on the relationship between digitalization capability and green innovation.#br#Following dynamic capability theory, this study introduces relationship strength and knowledge coupling as causal dual mediating variables, constructs a chain mediation model of digitalization capability acting on green innovation through relationship strength and knowledge coupling. By surveying manufacturing enterprises undergoing digital and green transformation in provinces including Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Shandong, and Jilin, the study obtains 409 valid questionnaires and empirically analyzes the survey data from manufacturing enterprises by using multiple regression and bootstrapping methods in an attempt to open up the "black box" of the role of digitalization capability on green innovation in manufacturing enterprises. #br#The results show that (1) digitalization capability significantly promotes green innovation in manufacturing enterprises. This result is consistent with the existing literature that holds that digitalization capability helps manufacturing enterprises identify and obtain value information in complex digital resources, helps manufacturing enterprises comprehensively grasp the resources required for green innovation, and provides support for green product, service, and process innovation based on digital technology. (2) Relationship strength and knowledge coupling play mediating roles in the relationship between digitalization capability and green innovation, respectively. On the one hand, relationship strength supports manufacturing enterprises in the transfer, absorption and reorganization of green innovation knowledge among enterprises, ensures the diversified resources required for green innovation, and makes up for the enterprises' own deficiencies in the knowledge base in the process of green innovation, so as to improve the quality of green innovation. On the other hand, manufacturing enterprises accelerate green knowledge integration and green knowledge base updating through continuous coupling of complementary and alternative knowledge with network members, thus promoting the growth of green innovation output. (3) Relationship strength and knowledge coupling play chain mediating roles between digitalization capability and green innovation. In Chinese culture, strong network relationships not only help accelerate problem solving in the green innovation process and reduce the time and cost required for green innovation, but also provide sufficient green knowledge resources for knowledge coupling, thus reducing the probability of green innovation failure.#br#The theoretical contributions of this study are mainly in the following three aspects. First, it confirms the important impact of digitalization capability on green innovation in manufacturing enterprises, providing empirical support for the relationship between digitalization capability and green innovation. Second, the study deeply analyzes the mechanism of digitalization capability on green innovation of manufacturing enterprises from the micro level, and explores the chain mediating role of relationship strength and knowledge coupling between digitalization capability and green innovation of manufacturing enterprises, which further opens the black box of the mechanism of digitalization capability on green innovation of manufacturing enterprises from the viewpoint of interrelationship between relationship strength and knowledge coupling and it emphasizes the successive mediating role, which provides new ideas for subsequent research. Third, it enriches the research on the after-effects of digitalization capability and expands the application of dynamic capability theory in the field of green innovation.#br#
