How Does the Regional Innovation Ecosystem Drive the Innovation Performance of High-tech Industries?The NCA and fsQCA Analysis Based on the Cases of30 Provinces in China |

Abstract Innovation is an important driving force for high-quality economic development. The construction of regional innovation system is an important support for the in-depth implementation of major national development strategies and the construction of an innovative country, and an important guarantee to overcome the 'middle-income trap' and achieve high-quality economic development. High-tech industry is an important practice subject of technological innovation and an important guarantee for China to build a world science center and innovation highland, and its innovation performance is closely related to the regional innovation ecosystem. However, the existing studies have not explored the coupling and coordination relationship of the internal elements of the ecological innovation system, and tend to analyze its impact on the high-tech industry from a single angle, and thus it is difficult to deeply explore the nonlinear relationship between the system and the industrial innovation performance by only focusing on the realization effect of a single element or part of the elements, and then treating the whole as the sum of the parts to carry out research. In other words the existing studies have not made a comprehensive interpretation of the high innovation performance of the high-tech industry brought by the innovation ecosystem theory. By the necessary condition analysis and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis, this paper explores the impact and driving path of regional innovation ecosystem on the innovation performance of China's high-tech industry from the perspective of "innovation subject-resource input-external environment".#br#The study selects seven indicators from three perspectives: innovation subjects, resource input and environmental construction in 30 provinces and autonomous regions in China to build a regional innovation ecosystem. Considering the singularity of the cross-sectional data, the study chooses the data of the result variables in 2020 to match the mean values of the condition variables in 2019 and 2018. The data is derived from the China Business Environment Report, China High-tech Industry Statistical Yearbook, China Statistical Yearbook, etc.#br#The conclusions drawn from the analysis are presented. First, using NCA and QCA methods, the study confirms that the single antecedent conditions in innovation subjects, resource input and environmental construction cannot constitute the necessary conditions for high innovation performance and non-high innovation performance in high-tech industries alone. Second, the high innovation performance of high-tech industries driven by regional innovation ecosystems has the characteristics of "multiple concurrency" and "asymmetry". Third, under certain conditions, there is a certain substitution relationship among the elements of regional innovation ecosystems. Fourth, there are spatial differences in the high-innovation configuration of high-tech industries driven by regional innovation ecosystems.#br#The innovation points lie in three aspects. First, the study analyzes the impact of the coupling interaction between innovation subjects and resource input in high-tech industries under the linkage matching of innovation infrastructure environment, legal and government affairs environment, and market open environment on the innovation performance of high-tech industries. Second,the overlapping paths are identified based on the comparative analysis of regional high configuration, and the alternative relationship among innovation subjects, resource input and environmental elements in the regional innovation ecosystem is identified. Third, according to the spatial characteristics, the spatial distribution differences of"innovation subject-resource input-environment" driven strategy in the eastern, central and western regions are further analyzed, and the complexity and importance of regional innovation ecosystem and high-tech industry innovation performance are stressed.#br#The results are subjective to some limitations. For instance, the antecedent conditions selected in this paper cannot cover all the influencing factors, and other antecedent conditions can be further expanded for configuration analysis. Researchers can further analyze the samples at the municipal level, increase the accuracy of research cases, and conduct in-depth research from the perspective of specific high-tech industries, such as manufacturing and electronic information industry.#br#
