Abstract In this paper, it takes innovation output of 29 provinces during 1985-2015 as the research object. Specifically, it uses the amount of patent applications received as the basic data analysis to research the spatial characteristics and correlation and of regional innovation output of 29 provinces based on Moran′s I index, VAR model and block model. The results show that regional innovation output in China have shown strong spatial agglomeration, and its spatial pattern presents nonequilibrium and spatial heterogeneity. The regional innovation output in China can〖JP〗 be divided four plates. The first is "agent plate", the second is "bidirectional spillover plate", the third is "net beneficial plate", the fourth is "main beneficial plate". While the four plates are reflexive, the correlation between the plates is also very significant. These conclusions will help to discover the change trajectory of regional innovation, and correctly understand their regional innovation capability and the influence of geographical characteristics of difference, and the different position and function of each region in the associated network, in order to better explore the transfer mechanism and development strategy of regional innovation.
