How do Network Embeddedness and Dual Learning Improve Supplier Innovativeness?A Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparison Analysis |

Abstract Innovation is the primary engine of development and the strategic support for constructing modern a economic system. Supply chain innovation is an important measure to implement the new development strategy. Supply chain innovation requires collaborative research between upstream and downstream of supply chain. Supplier innovativeness plays an important role in supply chain innovation.#br#Supplier innovativeness has been paid more and more attention by scholars. However, the research on the antecedent factors of supplier innovativeness is not rich at present. Existing literature cannot provide sufficient guidance for enterprises to enhance supplier innovativeness. It calls for further research on how to improve supplier innovation needs. Drawing on social network theory and dual learning theory, scholars explore the important role of network embeddedness and dual learning in enterprise innovation and supplier innovativeness. Network embeddedness helps enterprises deeply understand how suppliers connect with them to attract more attention from enterprises. It reflects the important role of cooperative innovation between suppliers and enterprises. Dual learning can help enterprises integrate knowledge across borders and help suppliers develop new products. However, the existing literature focuses on the net effect of single or multiple factors on supplier innovativeness, and rarely analyzes the synergistic effect of multiple factors on supplier innovativeness. In face of increasingly complex and highly uncertain external environment, it is necessary to explore the innovative driving path of suppliers from the holistic perspective. From the configuration perspective, the study uses the fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis to discuss the linkage effect and its action path on supplier innovativeness from two levels of network embeddedness and dual learning.It uses a questionnaire survey to collect data which is divided into two stages including a pre-survey and a formal survey, with 221 valid questionnaires obtained.#br#It is confirmed that,firstly, relational embeddedness, structure embeddedness, utilization learning and exploratory learning are not necessary conditions for high or non-high supplier innovativeness. A single antecedent condition has weak explanatory power on supplier innovativeness. There are many factors to improve supplier innovativeness. Secondly, there are four paths of high supplier innovativeness including interaction learning mode, cooperation co-creation mode, learning-driven mode and exploration-leading mode. There are two paths of non-high supplier innovativeness which are asymmetric with the path of supplier innovativeness improvement. Lastly, the reasonable matching between network embeddedness and dual learning plays an important role in improving the supplier innovativeness. The results can not only deepen the relevant theories of supply chain innovation, network embeddedness and organizational learning, but also provide ideas and references for improving supplier innovativeness and promoting the development of supply chain innovation.#br#The research breaks through the limitations of the existing literature that fails to fully explain the analysis of multi-component interdependence in supplier management. It breaks the bottleneck in supplier innovativeness improvement and reveals the complex causal mechanism of supplier innovativeness improvement. At the same time, from the perspective of configuration, the paper analyzes the synergistic effect of enterprise network embeddedness and dual learning on supplier innovativeness. It can enrich the application of fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis method in supplier innovativeness, and effectively identify the scenario mechanisms for different antecedent configurations to achieve the same goal. Thus it provides a new perspective for exploring promotion mechanisms of supplier innovativeness and explaining the differences in existing research.#br#There are practical implications for enterprises. Firstly, the thoughts of enhancing supplier innovativeness should be changed from "targeted optimization" to "configuration coordination". Secondly, enterprises need to strengthen the investment in specific relationships and build an open and inclusive organizational culture. Thirdly, the configuration paths between high supplier innovativeness and non-high supplier innovativeness are asymmetric. Enterprises cannot rely on experience to conclude that the reverse of non-high supplier innovativeness is the cause of high supplier innovativeness.#br#
