Abstract China's equipment manufacturing industry has developed rapidly when deeply embedding itself into the global value chain. However, the international competitiveness of China's equipment manufacturing products does not match with the industrial scale, especially China still lags far behind of developed countries in the advanced equipment manufacturing. Under the influence of a complex and turbulent external environment, such as the repeated outbreak of COVID-19 and the increasingly severe trend of anti-globalization, the path of the traditional pattern and extensive development has become impractical. China's equipment manufacturing enterprises urgently need to change a new upgrading path that can truly help to achieve functional upgrading and chain upgrading. The rapid development of digital technologies such as big data and cloud computing has created good external technical conditions for the transformation and upgrading of China's equipment manufacturing enterprises. Because of its fast connectivity, digital technology can over come the limitations of time, space and industrial upgrading, helping enterprises to achieve a positive feedback mechanism in internal and external networks, and thus solving the current problem of internal and external resource gaps. This paper focuses on how to make full use of the leapfrog upgrading opportunities brought by digital technology for China's equipment manufacturing enterprises to explore an effective upgrading path suitable under the new pattern of double circulation.#br#The logic of enabling China's equipment manufacturing enterprises with leapfrog upgrading by digital technology includes efficiency and flexibility. In terms of efficiency, digital technology can improve the scale efficiency and diversification efficiency of equipment manufacturing enterprises, help enterprises to improve the production and management process efficiency, and then obtain scale economy dividends and scope economy dividends. In terms of flexibility, digital technology can reduce the problem of information asymmetry among various entities, enhance the accessibility of diversified resources, and help enterprises obtain increasingly dynamic and personalized value-added space. The process of enterprises using digital technology is a phased evolution process. Under different upgrading modes, the form and degree of digital technology empowerment required are different. When enterprises seek to upgrade from capture level to independent level, they will carry out not only primary digital transformation, but also higher level digital transformation, that is, network level digitalization and ecological level digitalization. By comprehensively penetrating digitalization into the internal and external contacts of enterprises, enterprises can have instant information interaction and collaboration with relevant subjects.#br#The process of upgrading from low level to high level is also a process of leaping from low level innovation capability to high level innovation capability. Digital technology can enable enterprises' technological innovation in the whole chain process. In the technology acquisition stage, digital technology can quickly capture the relevance of things through machine learning of group intelligence. Enterprises can discover and capture different space technology knowledge to reach the leading edge of the industry, avoid the technology blockade of developed countries, and obtain frontier knowledge that meets the upgrading demands. In the stage of product development iteration, digital technology can help enterprises overcome the "non-local invention syndrome", obtain the idea of mass innovation in a wider range, and develop products at the world's leading level by integrating various R&D forces in the whole industry chain to carry out collaborative innovation. In the stage of technical value realization, digital technology can help to successfully promote products based on frontier technology upgrading to the high-end user market and fully demonstrate the product value. It will help China's equipment manufacturing enterprises achieve high-level and sustainable innovation by making full use of the enabling effect of digital technology at each stage of enterprise innovation .#br#At present, the application of digital technology in the field of equipment manufacturing is not comprehensive and deep enough. Many equipment manufacturing enterprises have not been able to carry out effective digital transformation. To fully tap the potential of digital technology empowerment, it is necessary to accelerate the leapfrog upgrading process of digital technology-enabled equipment manufacturing enterprises from five aspects of digital infrastructure construction, digital technology innovation, digital platform construction, digital technology application and governance system improvement, and the suggestions are proposed from three perspectives of digital technology providers, equipment manufacturing enterprises and optimization of the digital technology application environment.#br#
