Abstract By introducing Serendipity theory, 16 theoretical hypotheses of failure recovery mechanism of technological innovation are established based on type and motive power, and empirically tested through cases are put forward in biopharmaceutical industry. The research shows that saving the failure of technological innovation has two mainstream mechanisms as Observer-led-Walpolian and Observer-led-Merton, and four non-mainstream mechanisms as Theory-led-Merton, Network-emergent-Merton, Network-emergent-Bushian and Theory-led-Walpolian. On this basis, the paper further discusses the mechanism of saving the failure of technological innovation from four aspects: the motive force of saving, the type of saving, the combination of the motive force and the type of saving, and the joint effect of saving mechanism. Finally, we summarize the research conclusions, theoretical contributions and future prospects.
