Abstract The problems like patent technology imitation or plagiarism, low application efficiency, etc. are accompanied with China′s innovation achievements. Therefore, in recent years, many scholars have focused on the exploration of responsible innovation. Different from other innovations, responsible innovation requires employees to fully consider and incorporate social responsibility when implementing innovation activities, which helps to provide new ideas to reduce the liability issues arising from technological innovation and contribute to sustainable corporate development.#br#With the rise of knowledge workers and the ever-changing market environment, the relationship between enterprises and various internal and external stakeholders is becoming increasingly close and complex. It has been noted in the literature that the role of traditional leadership styles, such as ethical and inclusive styles, has been seriously questioned in the context of complex and challenging responsible innovation. As a new leadership style that attaches importance to the common cause of oneself and his subordinates, platform leadership values the common cause of oneself and one′s subordinates and it is in line with the leadership practice in the knowledge economy, and helps to stimulate responsible innovation behavior among employees. Compared with the traditional leadership style, platform leadership is different in that it not only pays attention to the success of its own career, but also pays more attention to the common cause with employees and stimulates employees to make common progress to achieve a win-win situation. According to the social learning theory, leaders are important objects for employees to learn from and imitate. Employees will actively learn and imitate the behavior of platform leaders committed to the development of common undertakings, and it will help to enhance their sense of identification and followers′ behavior, stimulate their sense of innovation and responsibility, and thus show more responsible and innovative behaviors that are conducive to career development. Hence, this paper intends to take platform leadership as the starting point to explore the impact of platform leadership on employees′ responsible innovation.#br#On the basis of the social learning theory, this paper aims to clarify why, how and when platform leaders can foster responsible innovation among employees. First of all, it explores why platform leadership can promote employees′ responsible innovation. Secondly, it examines how platform leaders can promote employees′ responsible innovation through employees′ authentic followership. Finally, it discusses when perceived human resource management strength moderates in the relationship among platform leadership, authentic followership and responsible innovation.#br#The data are collected through questionnaires and the samples are sourced from Tianjin, Chenzhou, Dongguan and Zhuhai, where the industries include technical service, transportation, finance and electricity industry, etc. The research objects are the on-the-job employees and their superior leaders of the above types of enterprises. The study was conducted from February to March 2022. To effectively control for common method bias, questionnaires are collected using multiple time-point matching. The relevant scales are drawn from established scales available in China and abroad. All variables are measured using the Likert 7-point scale, except for the basic information questions on gender, age, education and time spent with the current leader.#br#The results of the analysis of the data from a two-stage paired sample of 300 questionnaires are as follows. Firstly, platform leadership can significantly promote employees′ responsible innovation. Secondly, authentic followership mediates the relationship between platform leadership and employee responsible innovation. Thirdly, perception of human resource management strengthens the positive correlation between platform leadership and authentic followership. Fourthly, perception of human resource management strength positively moderates the mediating effect of platform leaders on employees′ responsible innovation behavior through authentic followership.#br#Finally, this paper discusses the theoretical significance and practical implications of the study findings. In terms of theoretical implications, this paper enriches the relevant research on the formation mechanism of employees' responsible innovation from the leadership level, and brings the authentic followership and perceived human resource management intensity into the transmission mechanism. This not only opens the “black box” of the relationship between platform leadership and employee responsible innovation, but also further enriches the boundary conditions for the research on the role of platform leadership on employee responsible innovation. In terms of practical implications, this paper provides theoretical support and practical guidance for the promotion of employees′ responsible innovation behavior and the diffusion of platform leadership.#br#
