Abstract Autonomy of overseas subsidiaries plays an important role in the knowledge transfer in multinational companies, but there is an obvious "paradox" in the existing researches. This study collected data of 132 overseas subsidiaries of Chinese multinational corporations and conducted an empirical study on the relationship between autonomy of different types of overseas subsidiaries and reverse knowledge transfer. It is found that there is a significant inverse U-shaped relationship between overseas subsidiary autonomy, marketing autonomy, personnel autonomy and reverse knowledge transfer.Financial autonomy and R&D autonomy of overseas subsidiaries have a significant positive impact on reverse knowledge transfer.Knowledge complexity negatively regulates the inverse U-shaped relationship between overseas subsidiary autonomy and reverse knowledge transfer. This study deepens the study of overseas subsidiary autonomy and has important practical significance for multinational companies to carry out subsidiary management and reverse knowledge transfer.
