Abstract Entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial alertness play an important role in uncertain entrepreneurial situations, which can affect the entrepreneurial process and entrepreneurial behavior. Little is known about entrepreneurs are born or acquired these capabilities by study. Based on self-efficacy theory, this paper constructs a theoretical model of entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial alertness on entrepreneurial opportunity identification and new venture performance. 202 executives from seven provinces were selected as the research object. The hierarchical regression results show that entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial alertness have significant effects on entrepreneurial opportunity identification and new venture performance. The positive impact of entrepreneurial self-efficacy plays a complete or partial mediated role in these relationships. Finally, the limitations and future research directions of the study are analyzed.
