Abstract Current research on the relationship between CSR (corporate social responsibility) and technological innovation remains inconclusive. In order to open the "black box" of influence mechanism of CSR on technological innovation, this study examined effects of CSR on exploratory and exploitative innovation, and investigate how such effects are conditional on unabsorbed slack resources. Drawing on R&D intensive firms that were listed in the Shanghai or Shenzhen Stock Exchanges from 2008 to 2016, the findings show that: ①CSR was positively associated with exploratory technological innovation;②unabsorbed slack resources positive moderated the relationship between CSR and exploratory technological innovation. This research contributes studies regarding the relationship between CSR and technological innovation, and enriches the contingent view of CSR.
