Abstract Drawing on self-enforcing agreement literature, this paper focus on exploring how a wronged firm's accommodation helps govern the exchange partner's opportunistic behavior, what drives a wronged firm's accommodation. The survey data were collected from 173 seller firms in China. The hypothesized relationships were examined using partial least squares (PLS) analysis. The findings suggest that a wronged firm's level of accommodation is positively related to observability of the exchanges and this positive relationship is moderated by complexity of exchange. Accommodation, as a cooperative response strategy, curtails opportunism in buyer seller relationships.
