The Evolution Path of Industry-university-research Deep Integration Driven by Modularity: A Study of Shenyang Blower Works Group |

Abstract Nowadays, technological innovation of enterprises is increasingly sophisticated and systematic, and it is difficult to fulfill innovative breakthrough by only relying on their own resources.Therefore, industry-university-research (IUR) deep integration, as a powerful way for enterprises to improve their technological innovation capability, has aroused extensive attention from current scholars.With IUR deep integration, enterprises can promote the full play of resource elements and capability advantages, realize the cross-organizational flow of innovation resources, and then bring long-term supply to their technological innovation capability.However, due to the lack of endogenous motivation and effective mechanism, the leading role of enterprises in IUR innovation is not prominent and IUR deep integration cannot be effectively realized.In this situation, it is of great significance to explore the dynamic factors, evolution path and operating mode of IUR deep integration to improve the cooperative innovation performance.#br#The existing literature about the conceptual framework and management mechanism of IUR deep integration in the Chinese context is obviously insufficient.There is a lack of discussion about enterprises’ beneficial practices for IUR deep integration in the Chinese context.Besides, relevant studies have proposed scattered research perspectives on IUR deep integration and have not yet construct an adaptive theoretical system.The theory of modularity can effectively dissolve the complexity of innovation system and clearly deconstruct the innovation network of IUR cooperation.Wherefore, based on modularity theory, the paper conducts an in-depth research on the evolution of IUR deep integration in a Chinese enterprise to meet practical needs and bridge research gaps.This paper raises the following research questions: (1) how does the enterprise’s IUR network develop under the influence of contextual empowerment? (2) how does operating mode and management mechanism evolve during different IUR cooperation stages? (3) what kind of strategy should enterprises choose to boost IUR deep integration? #br#From the perspective of modularity, this paper conducts a longitudinal single case study on the evolution path of IUR deep integration innovation in Shenyang Blower Works (SBW) Group and analyzes its IUR cooperation milestones and performance from 1998 to 2023.A variety of data collection methods are adopted such as interviews and field observations.Then by data coding, the research framework is proposed including four aspects, namely context, structure, mode and mechanism.According to the framework, the process of IUR deep integration in SBW is analyzed from four dimensions and divided into three stages.Finally, this article summarizes the effective mode, mechanism and evolution path of IUR deep integration, and makes suggestions on the choice of IUR cooperation strategy for related industries and enterprises.#br#The research indicates that (1)contextual factors empower the deep integration of IUR.Throughout the IUR cooperation process of SBW, political, market and technological contexts have promoted the transformation of its IUR cooperation strategies and deepened the IUR integration innovation.Under the empowerment of political, market and technological context, product modularity, organizational modularity and platform modularity gradually form the structural basis of IUR cooperative innovation network.(2) Furthermore, modularity is embedded in the practice of SBW’s IUR deep integration and drives the evolution of its operating mode, resource-integration mechanism, knowledge transfer mechanism and benefit-distribution mechanism.Product modularity is the foundation of demand matching between enterprises and universities or research institutes.Organizational modularity promotes the flexible interaction between nodes in the IUR cooperation network.Furthermore, platform modularity facilitates the boundary integration of cooperators with its functions of resource agglomeration and innovation incubation.(3) Driven by context and modularity, the strategy selection of IUR cooperative innovation has gone through the evolution path from loose coupling IUR combination strategy, advantage adding IUR collaborative innovation strategy to multidimensional embedding IUR deep integration strategy.The loose coupling IUR combination strategy, in which cooperators are interrelated but less dependent, adopts project mode with resource bricolage, explicit knowledge transfer and benefit agreement mechanisms.The advantage adding IUR collaborative innovation strategy which is based on mutual advantage and aimed at deepening collaboration matches the resource orchestration, tacit knowledge interaction and benefit sharing mechanisms in the co-construction mode.Finally, the multidimensional embedding IUR deep integration strategy employs the symbiosis mode with resource network ensemble, knowledge collaboration and benefit integration mechanisms.#br#
