How Big Data Capabilities Drive Firm Innovation: The Perspective of Resource Orchestration |

Abstract In order to obtain a competitive advantage in an uncertain environment, firms around the world have invested heavily in the capability building of big data, which has become an important way for firms to change their business methods, gain productivity and win market opportunities. However, on the topic of whether big data capabilities bring innovation to firms, the existing literature has yielded contradictory results. Some studies show that big data capabilities are positively related to firm innovation, but other studies show they may not. Whether big data capabilities can improve firm innovation is in controversy in the existing literature, which is not conducive to China's innovation and development strategies in the new era. Scholars believe that the impact of big data capabilities on firm innovation needs to be transmitted through different mediating variables, but the exploration of these mechanisms is insignificant at present. In addition,it is pointed out that some new perspectives can be expanded and integrated into the research framework of the relationship between big data capabilities and firm innovation. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the exact relationship between big data capabilities and firm innovation based on new theoretical perspectives and mediating mechanisms.#br#Given the actual development needs of firms and the call for theoretical research, this study uses the resource orchestration theory to bring resource integration, employee intrapreneurship, and empowerment-focused HRM into the research framework and explores the influence mechanism of different dimensions of big data capabilities on firm innovation. Specifically, it draws on scholars' views to divide big data capabilities into big data adoption, big data routinization and big data assimilation, and discuss their differential impacts on resource integration, employee intrapreneurship and firm innovation. Finally, the study analyzes the moderating role of empowerment-focused HRM between resource integration and employee intrapreneurship. Using the data of 173 internal platform firms nationwide, this study tests the above research model by using SPSS 24.0 and Amos 24.0 software tools and multiple regression models .#br#The results show that (1) big data adoption, big data routinization and big data assimilation have direct positive effects on firm innovation;(2) specifically, big data adoption, big data routinization and big data assimilation have positive effects on firm innovation through resource integration and employee intrapreneurship;(3) the three dimensions of big data capabilities (big data adoption, big data routinization and big data assimilation) have a positive impact on firm innovation through the chain mediating role of resource integration and employee intrapreneurship;(4) empowerment-focused HRM plays a positive role in moderating the positive relationship between resource integration and employee intrapreneurship.#br#The conclusion of this study has a certain theoretical contribution to clarify the influence mechanism of different dimensions of big data capabilities on firm innovation, and can also provide practical enlightenment for firms to obtain competitive advantage and innovation development. First, firms should pay attention to the construction of big data capabilities and make rational use of big data technology. A firm not only needs to pay attention to the integration of big data and the construction of management capabilities, but also needs to integrate big data capabilities into the innovation process of firm products and services, as well as the key strategic areas of the organization so as to comprehensively improve the technical capabilities of firms in dealing with big data. Second, firms need to seek a variety of resource arrangements to realize the transformation of big data and capabilities into innovation achievements. Firms not only need to pay attention to the construction of big data capabilities, but they also should realize the value and effective use of big data resources through resource integration based on the firm's big data technology capabilities, and then transform them into innovation achievements of firm products and services. Third, firms should attach importance to human resource management centered on empowerment,and properly empower employees to improve their internal identity and enable them to make decisions and work independently.#br#
