Abstract Using the GEM listed companies during 2011-2016 as samples, this paper examines the mechanism of how social network connection impacts on the performance of enterprise innovation. Based on social network analysis, we respectively conduct the interlocking relationships among independent directors to reflect weak ties, and geographic and industry relationships to reflect the strong ties of social network connection, the results showed the strength of the social network connection can promote enterprise innovation. The results show that both of the connections are positively correlated with innovation performance. Furthermore, by constructing the provincial intellectual property rights protection level index, we validate that IPR protection have moderating effect on network connection and innovation performance, which providing a new perspective for the innovative development of enterprises.
