Abstract Key inventors as an important participant in organizational R & D has a significant impact on innovation performance. But its impact mechanism is not clear. In this paper, the whole network as an intermediary variable,we use 36 communications manufacturing enterprise patent data,in two steps to reveal the impact mechanism of the key inventors on the R&D performance.Firstly, from the respective of cooperative network and the knowledge network, considering the influence of size and density of network’s change on the rangeability of network’s betweenness centrality. Moreover, this paper divides the rangeability of two network’s betweenness centrality into the positive and negative changes, the effects of these two changes on organizational innovation performance are discussed respectively. The results show that:①the key inventor can influence the rangeability of the cooperative network’s betweenness centrality by changing rangeability of the size of self-cooperation network, and decrease of the rangeability of the cooperative network’s betweenness centrality will cause the enterprise’s innovation performance decrease;②the key inventors can influence the rangeability of the knowledge network’s betweenness centrality by changing rangeability of the size and density of self-knowledge network, and decrease of the rangeabilith of the knowledge network’s betweenness centrality will cause the enterprise’s innovation performance increase.
