Abstract Based on the open innovation theory, this paper analyzes the impact of the breadth and depth of knowledge search on breakthrough innovation, and discusses the moderating effect of modularinnovation strategy and architecture innovation strategy.Based on the data of 206 Chinese enterprises,it is found that although search width and search depth are both promoting breakthrough innovation, the role of the two types of search depends on the innovation strategy. It is found that modular innovation strategy enhances the promotion of search depth and weakens the effect of search width.Instead, the architectural innovation strategy increases the search width boost and reduces the search depth.
