Abstract Patent collaboration is result of interplay by diversified factors in aspects of society, technology and institution, while interaction effect among these factors has not yet been researched enough. By integrating three aspects of factors, diffusion mechanism was discussed the impact of social capital on patent collaboration in the different scenario of absorptive capacity and patent protection strength. Empirical research was employed to examine validation of theoretical hypotheses by using method of ERGM based on samples in graphene technology field. Empirical results illustrated that social capitals have direct impacts on patent collaboration, i.e., patent collaboration is positively boosted by degree centrality and triangle structure embeddedness, but negatively restrained by structural hole and star structure embeddedness respectively. Moreover, absorptive capacity can positively moderate the relationships between structural hole and patent collaboration. Furthermore, both absorptive capacity and patent protection strength would together positively moderate the impact of degree centrality upon patent collaboration.
