Abstract Based on three domestic automobile manufacturing enterprises which implement intelligent transformation and upgrading, this paper conducts a cross-case study and constructs a theoretical model of intelligent transformation and upgrading of automobile manufacturing enterprises in China. The theoretical model shows that the intelligent transformation and upgrading of Chinese automobile manufacturing enterprises can be divided into three stages: automation, informatization and intelligence. In the automation stage, the transformation and upgrading are realized mainly through the implementation of the strategy of improving manufacturing capacity as the core; in the informatization stage, the transformation and upgrading are realized mainly through the implementation of the strategy of standardization and information integration as the core. In the intelligent stage, it is mainly through the implementation of enterprise flexibility construction as the core of the strategy to achieve transformation and upgrading.
