Abstract Drilling and completion technology is important to develop and utilize high temperature geothermal energy. This paper summarized the domestic and abroad situation of high temperature geothermal drilling and completion technology, finding the wide gap to develop the deep geothermal energy. Therefore, it is necessary to seek international cooperation and introduce foreign talents, drawing on their experience, to promote such resources forward in China. Taking the opportunity of "the 13th Five-Year Plan" of Chinese government in geothermal energy development and utilization, China University of Petroleum (Beijing) was authorized the "the 111 project" set up by the Ministry of Education and China Foreign Expert Bureau. It united 11 academic teams from UK, USA, Germany and France to carry out collaborative research, aiming to solve such problems as long period, high cost, high risk, difficult fracturing, and so on in developing deep geothermal resources. The authors have confidence to accelerate the technology progress in developing deep geothermal energy in China through this international cooperation.
